Our approach

Where the prices come from

No estimates dressed up as facts. Three sources, each labelled.

01

From the agency’s website

Where an agency publishes its rates, we record the figure, the page it came from and the date we saw it. The same crawl reads which areas it covers and what it offers.

02

Reported by the agency

We ask agencies what families pay. When an agency tells us, we show it as a reported rate with the date: what we were told, not a quote.

03

Never a guess

Where we have no rate for an agency we say so, and show the typical range for the council area instead. Where we have had to estimate the area an agency covers, the page says that too.

Another option

Rather choose your own carer?

Self-employed carers on PrimeCarers charge £18 to £25 an hour and set their own rates, with no agency margin on top. The same person comes each time, and live-in care is from about £1,120 a week.
